How to Stay Cool with a Broken AC

You may feel like you’re melting in Ohio’s heat. Trust us, we understand! But in the meantime, here are some practical tips to help keep you cool while waiting for your technician to arrive!

Ways to Stay Cool When Your AC Is Broken

  • Turn Your Ceiling Fans on and Set Them Counterclockwise
  • Close Your Blinds and Drapes
  • Refrain from Opening the Exterior Doors of Your Home
  • Open Your Windows in the Night
  • Stay Away from Using Heat-inducing Appliances
  • Make Your Own Temporary AC

Turn Your Ceiling Fans on and Set Them Counterclockwise

Typically, ceiling fans are automatically set to a clockwise rotation. This is because this direction pushes the air downward, where you can feel that extra cool air. With this in mind, when your air conditioner is NOT working, it’s always a good idea to set your ceiling fans to the counterclockwise setting.

By doing so, the counterclockwise fan direction will pull up any cool air lingering and disperse that bit of breeze around the room, making it feel more bearable in terms of comfort. Do you need to know where the switch on your ceiling fan is to change the blade direction? Try looking at the base of the mounted fixture on the ceiling. It’s common for there to be a switch positioned somewhere on the fan’s base. By hitting this switch, you should be able to change the direction of the blade’s rotation.

Close Your Blinds and Drapes

Although we all love a little sunlight peeping through our home, when your air conditioner isn’t functioning, sunlight shining through your windows isn’t the best thing at the moment. So, go ahead and close your blinds or draw your curtains or other window treatments closed, making sure to do this on every window in your home.

While you are at it, close any open windows as well. We know the thought of creating a cross-breeze may be tempting and sound like a good idea, but doing so in the daytime does not do much to keep the warm air out of your house.

Refrain from Opening the Exterior Doors of Your Home

On the same note, try to refrain from opening the exterior doors of your home as much as you can. This means any door that leads to the outside, such as your front door, back door, basement doors leading outside, or garage door. It may seem unnecessary, but avoiding opening these doors will significantly reduce the chances of unwelcome warm air seeping inside your home and making matters worse.

Open Your Windows in the Night

However, the outdoor temperature naturally decreases at night. The evening temperatures can provide additional relief and keep your home feeling cooler and more comfortable. You can open your windows at night, but make sure to close them once again in the morning.

Stay Away from Using Heat-inducing Appliances

You also want to avoid adding unnecessary heat to your home while waiting for your air conditioning system to get up and running once again. As such, using large household appliances should be avoided as they produce a lot of heat, which will raise your home’s temperature further. These appliances include but are not limited to:

  • Oven
  • Stove
  • Dryer
  • Dishwasher

Make Your Own Makeshift AC

This last suggestion is a little creative, but you might find it helpful if you are particularly hot. After all, “Desperate times call for desperate measures!”

Did you know you can make your cooling device using two simple materials? These materials are ice and an electric fan! It sounds funny, but it’s true—and adequate. You can achieve this by gathering some ice in a large bowl or container and placing it directly in front of an electric fan, then turning it on and voilà! You have created yourself a makeshift AC!

The fan blows warm air onto the ice, which in turn cools the air passing over it, resulting in a cool, refreshing breeze that can greatly assist in providing you with that much-deserved extra relief. With this tip, you can sit back, kick your feet up, and wait for us to do all the hard work!
