Microwaves are a staple of the modern home. These appliances are used almost daily because microwave technology offers a fast, easy way to cook many foods. They are highly convenient for everyone. However, having said that, microwave ovens can still cause potential damage to your home or harm your health without the proper precautions.

1. Confirm that the door shuts tightly and everything runs properly

For many obvious safety reasons, microwaves need to be working correctly. Avoid using this appliance if its turntable rotates and the exhaust fans continue running when the door opens; this is not how it was designed to operate. If this happens, replace the product with a new one or identify the problem and get to the bottom. Make sure the door closes, and everything works according to the book. 

2. Never place metal items inside of the oven

This is a self-evident safety tip that should go without saying. We all should know this. Nevertheless, it happens to even the best of us occasionally. If metal, such as aluminum foil, is put in the microwave, it could spark a fire. Additionally, it could also compromise food safety or damage your equipment. The same goes for empty containers. Be safe using your microwave! They aren’t made for metal! 

3. Exercise caution when heating water

When you put water or a liquid-based substance in a microwave, it can suddenly get to boiling and become extremely hot. Because of this, you might want to consider wearing something that will protect your hands from the hot item when removing the dish. 

4. Only use microwaveable ceramic, plastic, and glass dishes

We should always check the bottom of dishes for the words “microwave safe” before using anything in the microwave. Another no-brainer here. Improper materials can melt, catch fire or harm the appliance by reflecting microwave radiation into it. Because of all this and more, you must ensure that what you’re putting in your microwave is microwave-safe and suited for use.  

5. Never activate this appliance when it’s empty

If you turn on your microwave when there isn’t anything inside it, it can destroy the unit’s magnetron or start a fire. Unlike conventional ovens and toaster ovens, microwave ovens do NOT need to be preheated before cooking. Nevertheless, some food substances are needed to maintain safety.  

6. Do not place sealed containers inside the oven

Sealed containers are another no-no inside microwaves. They could inflict damage or injuries by exploding as their contents heat. Remember that this can also happen if you cook certain foods without removing their shells, and as noted above, you cook something with metal in it, such as a spoon or fork. 

7. This equipment doesn’t usually affect pacemakers

Years ago, there was a concern that radiation leakage from a microwave could interfere with certain electronic cardiac pacemakers. Nevertheless, Today’s pacemakers are designed to protect against these issues. Nonetheless, faulty units can still trigger health problems. Turn off and unplug the appliance if it seems to cause palpitations or make you feel dizzy. It’s better to be safe than sorry. 

8. Always keep an eye on your microwave oven while in use

While certain things take longer to heat up in the microwave than others, it’s good to keep a close eye on everything, whether water or food. Because of this, we suggest you don’t leave the room for long periods of time. Keeping an eye out allows you to shut it off before a minor problem turns severe.
